Japan’s once-mighty electronics giants have missed the smartphone wave.

Apple and Samsung are enjoying record profits and are combining for some 54% of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter. The combined share for Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and other Japanese manufacturers: 8%.
